40 Years Ago Wednesday, Nov. 28, 1973 Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene

Naval hospitalman recruit Veletta J. Moore, daughter of Mrs. Kathleen L. Moore, Garfi eld, graduated from recruit training for women at the Naval Training Center in Orlando, Fla. A 1973 graduate of Pea Ridge, she was scheduled to report to Hospital Corpsman School in Great Lakes, Ill.

Six Pea Ridge football players received all-district honors. The players awarded were Curtis Snow, fi rst team defensive end; Jordon Miser, second team o◊ensive tackle; Danny Hickman, second team o◊ensive center; Randy Easterling, second team quarterback;

Gary Brown, second team punter; Jon Brown, second team defensive end; and James Grotts, second team defensive linebacker. Snow also received honorable mention all-state honors.

The Blackhawk football team scored 110 points all season for the 1973 season. Randy Easterling led the team with scoring 28 points. The leader in defensive statistics was Jackie Ford with 102 tackles, 80 assists, four fumble recoveries, six pass interceptions and one blocked punt.

There were Scotch pines being sold to be used as christmas trees for $2. People could go to farm and pick out which tree they wanted.

The Blackhawk basketball “B” team lost to Decatur 45-35 while the “A” lost 77-61. Ricky Webb had 11 points for the “B” squad and Lester Hall led the “A” team with 20 points.

The senior high girls basketball team included Audra Saylor, Tracy Buck, Deena Patterson, Melissa Webb, Amy Wilkerson, Lisa Webb, Tina O’Dell, Deann Carlson and Connie Moore.

New Life Singers entertained the senior citizens at the annual Thanksgiving dinner sponsored by Beta Alpha Chapter. The singers were Barbara Patton, Tommy Patton, Ron Fletcher, Bonnie Austin and Wayne Casey.

Timmy Small, Wesley Wilkerson, DeAnn Carlson, Wesley Billington, Kelly Hale, Mike Billington and George Patton received trophies for their leadership within 4-H activities.

The Pea Ridge Outlet store was selling ladies and mens sweaters for $9.97and had lots of toys and gift items with 30-day layaway available.

Thursday, Dec. 2, 1993 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

The Pea Ridge United Fund campaign chairman Freida Crabtree, said that it was doubtful that the organization would reach its goal of $30,000.

Brooke Anderson was the basketball player of the week. Her coach said that “her defense has been good and her rebounding has been excellent.”

Nancy Hollenbeck volunteered to be The TIMES correspondent in Avoca.

She said she was interested in gathering the news about her neighbors and helping spread the word.

The newspaper was selling the left-over mule jump shirts, sweatshirts and caps. The sweatshirts were on sale that week for $10.

10 Years Ago Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003 The TIMES of Northeast Benton County

It was announced that Montgomery’s, the local supermarket in Pea Ridge, was being taken over by Marvin’s IGA. The new owners planned on expanding the perishables section, which meant more fresh meat and produce.

The ’Hawks end their football season with a 34-14 loss to Palestine-Wheatley.

The ’Hawks were ahead by 1 point going into the fourth quarter.

Both basketball teamslost this week against Gentry. The boys lost 59-49, while the girls lost 52-25.

The Beta Alpha Thanksgiving dinner served 100 meals, plus 20 more carryout meals. Miss Pea Ridge Ashley Morgan, contestants from the Junior Miss Pea Ridge and members of the local girl scout troops helped serve the meals.

Arthur Modschiedler of Lost Bridge Village was inducted into the Southwestern College of Business Hall of Fame. The hall of fame honors alumni who have excelled and been successful in their fi eld of business.

The Northeast Benton County, NEBCO, Fire Department received $4,000 fromthe Beaver Lake Sailing Club.
