Roles change in school athletics

Back on the gym floor, Larry Walker is once again coach of the senior Lady Blackhawks, a position from which he resigned several years ago. He is no longer the athletic director.

Tony Travis is the newest athletic director and began those duties Tuesday, Feb. 12.

“I’m excited about it,” Travis said recently of the new responsibilities.

Heather Henson Wade, named senior high girls’ coach in 2007, has stepped back from coaching the senior Lady ’Hawks.

“It was definitely my decision,” Wade said recently. “It was a hard decision. I’ve put a lot of time into these kids. It’s more than just basketball, it’s mentoring.”

Wade, the mother of two young boys, said family demands prompted her to scale back hercoaching responsibilities, but added she will still be coaching and teaching.

“We’re excited about the quality of our personnel and the new challenges ahead,” superintendent Rick Neal said.

“There are two things that are extremely exciting,” School Board president Joshua Ramseysaid. “First, having someone as talented as coach Travis to step up and lead the athletic department is exciting.

“And, to have someone as talented as coach Walker is great and he will be doing something he loves,” Ramsey said.
